Each September bright, enthusiastic students enter the two middle schools excited, anxious, and ready for new experiences. One of those experiences is attending the Teen Center. Many of the students already know about the Teen Center from an older sibling, neighbor, or a babysitter. They know the activities offered at the monthly Teen Centers (held at the middle schools) include a dance floor with DJ, video games, a concession stand, informal sports and other special events. Where does the Teen Center originate? Is it the school, the municipality, the PTA or a non-profit group? The answer is all of the above. The Mt. Lebanon Teen Activities Association directs Teen Centers. The municipality, the school district and a group of concerned parents formed the TAA years ago. Their mission was to provide a safe, age-appropriate activities for middle level students in a chaperoned environment. A volunteer board of directors oversees the program with the support of the municipality, the school district, and the PTA. The municipality generously funds the program and the school district provides the facility and custodial service. The PTA supports the TAA by providing pages in the PTA newsletter for listing upcoming events and assisting in volunteer recruitment. A paid coordinator plans and attends all events, training the 25 volunteers needed each month.
